all week long. we're going to do all this again at the democratic national convention next month in chicago. we have no idea what's going to happen there. thanks for watching. this week i'm alex michaelson reporting this week from milwaukee. aids walk. the event aims to raise awareness and funds for hiv aids research. a homeless encampment in a in an east bay city is scheduled to be cleared this week. the first sweep in

reporting 13 a concord reporting 16. and most if not all of us are a little bit cooler this morning. livermore. you are down by eight. you're definitely feeling a difference there in napa you are down by 556 degrees. this morning in napa. meanwhile, over towards the city, we have 54 in san francisco and low 60s to start your day, san jose. so again, temperatures continuing to fall into the afternoon, especially for our inland cities. yesterday. concord a warm one for you at 96 today you're going to 88. not going to last though. temperatures will be back up as we get into monday. better look at today and the days ahead coming up. >> thank you rosemary. well, hundreds are heading to san francisco this morning to take part in the annual aids walk. ktvu is amanda quintana is there now and shows us the festivities underway. amanda >> oh, yeah. well, the organizers i just spoke to, they're hoping it gets a little warmer this morning. so people come out, but they are expecting thousands of people. they said to come out for this aids walk.

that's how many registered. so take a look. they're just getting set up right now. but people are going to start showing up soon. they can check in at 8:00 and then the actual five k walk begins at 1030 this morning. now participants come for a bunch of reasons, but some of the reasons to honor those who have passed from aids to celebrate all we've accomplished in fighting the disease. and then they really come to support this shared mission of creating a future free of aids. now this is a huge event for the city of san francisco, because there's really just so much history with this walk. it started in 1987. they've raised more than $96 million for organizations across seven bay area counties. it's the largest hiv aids walk in northern california. now, just this year, they've raised $960,000. so they are very close to $1 million. just this year. although there is still no cure for aids, there are medications

that can control hiv and prevent it from progressing. so most people in the u.s. with hiv don't develop aids. but, you know, in speaking to the organizers, he said, it's still so, so important to have events like this to make sure people are educated. people know about these medications. people really know how dangerous it could be. and how far we have come. there's going to be a really large quilt here that is supposed to be something really beautiful to see that really honors some of the people that have passed from hiv and aids. so that's something that he said. a lot of people come here to just see that and kind of remember the lives taken by this disease. so that's going to be something that kind of emotional here. but then there's the breakfast. this morning and the walk this morning. so there's going to be a lot that we're going to be bringing you throughout the morning today. live in san francisco amanda quintana ktvu fox two news. >> thank you amanda. well police in fremont are investigating a deadly shooting. the gunfire was

first reported shortly before 130 yesterday afternoon near mission boulevard in the city's niles neighborhood. several people living in the area say they heard the sound of more than a dozen gunshots, then immediately called police. >> i just heard a gang load of gunshots just just, you know, rounding off, you know, and they kind of it was like a pause in the middle and then like, maybe 6 or 7 more. something was probably like 12, 15 shots, maybe. >> police say they found a man suffering from several gunshot wounds. he died at the scene. so far, there have been no arrests in this case. and investigators say it's still unclear what led up to the shooting. >> time now. 705. a chase across the bay area, now under investigation this morning. it all started in daly city before a woman was ultimately hit by a car in oakland. witnesses say one person was taken into custody. two others got away. ktvu joey jordan spoke with

those who saw all the commotion. >> what appears to be multiple people pinned between a car and a boutique are actually just mannequins. >> honestly, it just happened so fast. witnesses say it started as a car chase involving daly city police, ending across the bay at fruitvale avenue and foothill boulevard in oakland around 1 p.m. on saturday. >> so crazy. you know, it's danger. >> jennifer escobar is a hairstylist. next door and was with a client when she heard the crash. >> yeah. one lady, she's screaming that screaming lady was hit by a gray lexus, right? >> as she stepped out of the store that was hit where she was shopping on her birthday, according to a store employee. >> they hit her, and she she went up in the air and she she fell on the floor. >> the 22 year-old injured shopper was taken away by ambulance. witnesses saw a man who appeared to be in his 20s, getting out of the car and running away while another was arrested.

>> i just started like you know, freaking out a little bit. >> an officer could be seen holding a star chase gps device. officers can shoot the device at a suspect's car, which the device sticks to. this allows officers to track the suspect without getting into a dangerous high speed chase. >> i mean, it's oakland. there's always chaos, right? >> a daly city police suv with visible front end damage was towed away from the scene. it's not yet clear how the patrol car was damaged in the chase. daly city police were not available for comment. in oakland, joey jorda, ktvu, fox two news. >> and another car crash across the bay in san francisco. sfpd says four people are now in the hospital after officers on patrol saw a car crash into two vehicles near vanessa mcallister near city hall. it happened around 1130 last night. citizen app footage shows officers treating one of the two men who

had been driving the car. sfpd says both men are now in custod. you can see the in that video just how damaging that crash was. car doors are mangled, debris littered the street there. the three victims and one of the suspects are currently hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries. >> more than 9000 illegal pills were recovered in marin county after an international package was intercepted. marin county officials say the drugs, suspected to be fake fentanyl pills, were found at a home in novato. this was after homeland security busted a package from the uk with fentanyl inside, which was on its way to that very same home. officials say the street value of these pills is between 45 and $50,000. detectives also seized suspected cocaine, ketamine, amphetamines, psilocybin mushrooms and heroin there. two people living at the residence were arrested on a number of drug charges. >> a homeless encampment on an oakland beach is getting cleared

this week. the city of oakland is planning on executing a homeless sweep at toll plaza beach on tuesday. it's the first homeless sweep in the bay area since the u.s. supreme court's ruling that allowed officials to clear out encampments without offering shelter. we spoke to an unhoused resident who lives there, comes down to affordable housing. >> most of these people are living in their rvs or motorhomes or everything, because they just can't afford the rent of apartments anymore. >> and over in san francisco, mayor london breed said aggressive sweeps will start next month. >> that global tech outage looks to still be disrupting some service at our three local airports. at sfo, 60 flights have been canceled, more than 70 have been delayed. san jose has seen more than 20 delays and cancellations at travelers out of oakland are seeing more than 15. the outage, of course, taking place on friday morning after a security software update sparked a blackout for airlines health care facilities, banks and a number of other companies.

ever, democrats need the strongest possible candidate to defeat former president trump. in november. trump has been polling ahead of biden in crucial states. several democratic leaders, including some from the bay area, have asked the president to drop out of the race. >> former house speaker nancy pelosi largely avoided the hot topic of president biden's reelection bid during her appearance at a democratic fundraiser, pelosi spoke to more than 900 people attending a democratic event billed as a unity dinner in raleigh, north carolina. this was last night, the democrat from san francisco barely mentioned president biden's name and largely focused on the republican nominee. pelosi said the last time donald trump was in the white house, the republicans provided huge tax breaks to the rich. >> all they did was pass a bill that gave 83% of the benefits to the top 1, the top 1% adding $2

trillion to not million, not $2 trillion to the national debt. >> pelosi is among a growing group of prominent democratic leaders who have reportedly expressed concerns about president biden's ability to beat trump in november, former president donald trump appeared at his first campaign rally since his attempted assassination eight days ago. >> last night, trump spoke before a large crowd of enthusiastic supporters in the crucial swing state of michigan. the now official 2024 republican presidential candidate mentioned the attempt on his life several times during his speech in grand rapids. >> the other side is going around trying to make me sound extreme. they keep saying he's a threat to democracy. i'm saying, what the #### did i do for democracy? last week, i took a bullet for democracy. >> this was trump's first speech since his formal nomination at

last week's republican national convention. he was joined by his newly announced running mate, republican senator jd vance of ohio, who could possibly reject the idea that four years of president trump has been a #### of a lot better than four years of joe biden, right? and trump will now make separate campaign appearances this week. vance has left michigan to appear at two events in ohio and virginia. tomorrow, trump will go to north carolina for a campaign rally in north carolina on wednesday, 106 days away from the election. >> can you believe it? i know it's, what, three plus months? >> so it's coming near. but we still got summer to contend wit. and if you like it hot, you're going to love this week. and if you like it a little chilly, at least around the bay. today is okay, right? >> yeah. temperatures are going to continue to fall off. looking at some of the numbers expected as we get into the week ahead, let me turn this on. we'll take a look first at what is happening outside our doors at this hour. we've got some fog

out there. we've got the low clouds, the marine layer is deeper that allowing for temperatures to fall off during the overnight hours. most of us are starting out at least a few degrees cooler and in our hills due to this thicker marine layer and moving farther inland, our hills are seeing temperatures down by ten. even 20 degrees. it's not going to last as we get into tomorrow. heat advisory is back. we've got the heat advisory for our north bay valleys and hills over towards our hills in the santa cruz mountain area, as well as the santa clara valley, and an excessive heat warning for the inner east bay valley and hills. this will go until wednesday evening. we do expect the tuesday to be the hottest, but there's again a look at where that excessive heat warning is getting into the futurecast model. this is the element dominating our weather pattern for the time being that begins to change tomorrow. that high pressure from the desert southwest strengthening back our way. and you can see as it the

affordably. >> people say, really? i didn't know this. i drive by foster city and there's until you get out on the water and in a way like this that you don't have to get a bathing suit on, you don't have to get wet. you don't have to be a windsurfer. >> you may not know it exists, but once you find it, you aren't likely to forget it. >> a lot of people realize it's here, but they don't really understand or don't really get to see a lot of it. and that's why it's fun to go out in our boats. we've had people that lived in foster city for 30 years. they go for a little boat ride and they come back. they, you know, i've known this is here, but i didn't really know it was here. >> welcome to the foster city lagoon. it's been a special part of foster city since the city was built. when foster city was built by jack foster. >> the canal system was built. or the lagoon system, as we like to call it, was built as the street runoff for rain, for storm drainage for all of foster city. and it's navigable with

our boats year round. in the wintertime, all the rains go into the lagoon, and they're pumped out to the, to the bay. so the main channel is about four miles long. it's the same size and shape as the grand canal in venice, but the architecture is a little different. >> surrounded by homes at its deepest, the lagoon is only about six feet deep, and the turners really want you to experience it. you see, the turners fell in love with this spot years ago. they even had their wedding reception here and live on the water's edge. but they never wanted to keep this spot to themselves. they wanted to share what they loved. >> my wife and i have had one of these boats for 20 years already, and we just thought it was a lot of fun. so, most people don't get to ride in an electric boat in foster city unless there's a rental concession, because otherwise you have to have a house with a dock to own one of these boats. so there are about 400 here, but

by starting a rental concession, the reason the city was interested is because it gets the public access to the water that you couldn't get otherwise unless you paddled or canoed or something. but for ordinary families, this creates a beautiful access. >> ten years ago, they convinced the city to let them rent out duffy electric boats. >> when we started the rentals went out from that recreation center and i would literally tow them every morning and every evening from my house. >> today, edgewater marine has a dedicated dock and a fleet of duffy's available to rent. these boats are very user friendly. >> the throttle is at your right hand right there. yeah, if you pull it up, pull it up straight up. it's off. >> because electric boats are less like a tesla and more like a golf cart. in fact, they use golf cart batteries because powerboats and anything with a motor are banned in this lagoon. >> it's not thrilling, it's just relaxing. so i get calls once in

breeze and we know those two combined are going to help to put our temperatures in check, giving you a live look here from ktvu as we attempt to look towards san francisco. can't see it from this point of view this morning. coastal flood advisory does continue. if you are just joining us, this began a couple of days ago. we'll go until early tuesday morning. the astronomical tides creating those flooding conditions in and around low lying areas adjacent to the bay. next high tide isn't until about midnight tonight. meanwhile across the bay area, in addition to the clouds, we have mist and drizzle. the onshore breeze through fairfiel, reporting anywhere from 25 to 30mph right now, clocking 26 at travis air force base in fairfield. oakland you are sustained at 13, so a little bit of a breeze out there. in addition to cooler temps down by five degrees in concord this morning, down by five in napa. how about the numbers? we've got 59 in oakland, 56 at sfo and in the north bay 54 to start your day in novato. temperatures

gains that we've made in the fight against hiv and aids, as people get older and have been taking the meds for a long time, there's other things that happen. you know, if there's a golden compass program at ucsf and they're showing, hiv and aging in people, like most people with hiv are 50 years or older. and so we have to take care of those people, you know, the long term. long term effects of all the medications be on. so it could be affecting their kidney, it could be affecting their liver, it could be diabetes, you know, just all kinds of things that are happening now. >> another big reason is to educate younger people. younger people that didn't live through, you know, the time in the 80s where a lot of people, they would get hiv aids and they would pass away just a few months later. so it's important to educate people about the history of aids and then also how far we've come and what can be done now to help people if they do end up getting hiv or aids. so we're going to be here

this morning showing you some of the events throughout the morning and showing you people as they show up. and hopefully they can warm up here. live in san francisco. amanda quintana, ktvu, fox two news. >> all right, amanda, thank you for that. time now is 735. police are searching for two suspects involved in a car chase that led officers from daly city across the bay into oakland. all this took place saturday afternoon, ending with a big crash at fruitvale avenue. at foothill boulevard. witnesses say two of the suspects ditched the car escape while another was arrested right before the crash. a person working nearby says the gray lexus hit an innocent woman as she was shopping. >> they hit her and she she went up in the air and she she fell on the floor, played by an ambulance. >> no word on her condition this morning. police are still investigating that incident. back here in the bay area, voters in southern alameda county have recalled two board members of the sunol glen

unified school district. the recall campaign began last fall when board president ryan jurgensen and trustee linda hurley announced their plan to ban pride flags from being flown on local school campuses. they made up the majority of the three member school board. well, the final certification results released on friday show voters decided to recall them by a slim 52% margin. >> a heated debate on social media between state senator scott wiener of san francisco and elon musk is intensifying. musk posted this message on x, quote ab 1955, authored by apologist scott wiener, and which gavin newsom just signed into law in california is a child predators dream. the bill is a newly signed law that prevents schools from telling parents if a child identifies as transgender. wiener responded saying, quote, elon joins donald trump, junior ted cruz and marjorie taylor greene. she called me a communist groomer in

calling me a because i think the lives of lgbtq kids have value and shouldn't be destroyed. bigots like elon have said this about gay men forever. it instigates violence. >> we are keeping track of multiple fires that broke out over the weekend. this morning, fire crews are battling a wildfire east of clear lake near the border of lake and colusa counties. the ridge fire broke out yesterday afternoon. the last update from cal fire headed at 2500 acres and containment only at 15. 50 buildings are currently being threatened. several road closures are in place, with no estimated time of reopening and also in placer county, firefighters are stamping out a small fire near the community of newcastle. the lehi fire broke out friday evening, burning about nine acres. cal fire says it was sparked by someone who was mowing his lawn and very dry grass or grass, rather, evacuations were put into place. those have since been lifted.

the fire burned at least one building in that area. well, the ripple effect of a deadly explosion in the east bay are still being felt some 80 years later. >> more than 300 men lost their lives in the port chicago disaster near concord, when two munitions ships blew up during world war two. ktvu is joey horta shows us what's being done to prevent the historic tragedy from being forgotten. >> a solemn commemoration 80 years in the making. with a helicopter flyover honoring hundreds of lives lost, killed 320 military, merchant, marine and civilian personnel july 17th, 1944. two ships at the port chicago naval magazine at suisun bay, loaded with munitions, exploded. 320 men died instantly, including more than 200 black men. >> they had been white. they

would never have been put in the situations they were put in. >> it would become the largest homeland disaster of world war two. the port chicago disaster. the nonprofit friends of port chicago national memorial fought to make the site a national memorial. >> we're small, but we are mighty. our mission is to honor those who died here, those who served here, those who were injured here, those who protested here. >> the port chicago 50, a group of black sailors refusing to return to duty at the disaster site without proper training, fearing another explosion. >> you cannot take the racism out of this history. >> the men would be convicted of mutiny and sent to prison. after the war. they would be released and segregation of the military would soon come to an end. >> today we have corrected a historic wrong. >> just this week, the secretary of the navy announcing the exoneration of those 50 men. a

november ballot in response to pleasanton's growing budget deficit. if approved, the tax

degrees. so the wind a heat advisory begins 11:00 tomorrow morning. we'll go until wednesday. so three days of pretty hot weather expected away from the coast and away from our bayside communities. notice not included here, but our north bay, south bay and the inner east bay is where we do again, expect some of the hotter temperatures for the days ahead by bill back just a little bit. this is the weather element back in here. a little hard to see what's going on, but helping to provide us with the stronger onshore breeze and the deeper marine layer. but by tomorrow it's moving out and high pressure will be strengthening in once again. and we are looking at a little bit of monsoonal moisture over the sierra, although not seeing much in the way of thunderstorms for the days ahead. if this is going to be your plan for the week, the winds out there, hayward reporting at 12mph, livermore reporting eight through the delta travis air force base, 15 to 25mph at this time. so a bit

ethics of consumer safety, the bay area news group reports the family of a man who was killed last year while driving his tesla on autopilot claims the automaker misrepresented the capabilities of its technology. tesla is also dealing with several other lawsuits, legal action and investigations on state and federal levels, all related to the autopilot system, which does not automatically pilot the car. >> west nile virus positive mosquitoes in san jose have prompted a targeted control treatment in some areas. next week, santa clara county health officials will be spraying pesticide in parts of san jose and unincorporated areas on wednesday, people living in zip codes nine, five, 127 and 95140 may see a truck rolling around the area around ten that night. the targeted mosquito control

treatment is scheduled to last up to four hours. an infestation of red imported fire ants has been reported in santa barbara county. the insects have been spotted in the affluent community of montecito. officials believe the ants might be from an infested nursery. stock shipped from riverside county in september of 2023. these ants are known to be aggressive, biting and stinging humans in defense of their nest and colony. their venom can cause painful red bumps on the skin. pest control professionals are reportedly conducting treatments in montecito. >> yikes. ucla hoping to build a plant filled rooftop garden designed specifically for psychedelic assisted therapy sessions, psychedelic assisted therapy has shown promise in treating a wide range of mental health disorders, and that includes depression, post-traumatic stress disorder as well. ucla is a leader in the research studying psychedelics, including work with the mdma and

>> yes. well good morning. they are just starting to open up the line to check in right now. people have been arriving excited for the pancake breakfast. hopefully get some warm pancakes before they do this walk that starts at 1030. and there's a lot of reasons that people come to this event. you can see some people dress up, they get really excited for it. but people are here to honor those who have passed from hiv and aids. but also to celebrate how far we've come, all the accomplishments that we've made in fighting the disease. and then they're walking today with this shared mission of creating a future free of aids. so this is really a huge event for san francisco because it's been happening in the city for so long. it started in 1987. they've raised more than $96 million for organizations across seven bay area counties. now, this year, just this year, they have raised over $960,000 already. so they are very close

to $1 million just for this yea. and although there is still no cure for aids, there are medications that can control hiv and prevent it from progressing. so most people in the u.s. with hiv do not develop aids. but i spoke to the organizer about why it's still so important to raise money and hold events like this one. >> young people need to know the history they also need to understand that there's help out there. and we also need to let people know that if you become hiv positive, there's all of these different organizations that you can go to that will help you. >> one of the ways that they remember and honor people who have passed from hiv and aids is they have this large quilt. it's going to be this huge quilt that they're going to roll out here. and each piece represents people that have passed. so that's something that people often come just to see and kind of take in the gravity of the disease and

how many people it has taken from us. so that's a way to remember people, to honor people. right before they go on this walk. but we'll continue to bring you updates as we're here this morning throughout the morning. live in san francisco, amanda quintana, ktvu, fox two news. >> thanks for that report. amanda police in fremont are investigating a deadly shooting. the gunfire was first reported shortly before 130 yesterday afternoon near mission boulevard in the city's niles neighborhood. several people living in the area say they heard the sound of more than a dozen gunshots, then immediately called police. >> i just heard a gang load of gunshots. just just, you know, rounding off, you know, and they kind of it was like a pause in the middle and then like, maybe 6 or 7 more, something with probably like 12, 15 shots, maybe. >> police say they found a man suffering from several gunshot wounds. he died at the scene. so far, there have been no arrests

in this case. and investigators say it's still unclear what led up to this deadly shooting. >> time now it's 806. a chase across the bay area now under investigation. this all started in daly city before a woman was ultimately hit by a car in oakland. witnesses say one person was taken into custody. two others got away. ktvu. josé horta spoke with those who saw all of the commotion. >> what appears to be multiple people pinned between a car and a boutique are actually just mannequins. >> honestly, it just happened so fast. >> witnesses say it started as a car chase involving daly city police, ending across the bay at fruitvale avenue and foothill boulevard in oakland, around 1 p.m. on saturday. >> so crazy. you know, it's danger. >> jennifer escobar is a hairstylist. next door and was with a client when she heard the crash. >> yeah. one lady, she's screaming that screaming lady was hit by a gray lexus, right? >> as she stepped out of the

store that was hit where she was shopping on her birthday, according to a store employee. >> they hit her, and she she went up in the air and she she fell on the floor. >> the 22 year-old injured shopper was taken away by ambulance. witnesses saw a man who appeared to be in his 20s, getting out of the car and running away while another was arrested. >> i just started like, you know, freaking out a little bit. >> an officer could be seen holding a star chase gps device. officers can shoot the device at a suspect's car, which the device sticks to. this allows officers to track the suspect without getting into a dangerous high speed chase. >> i mean, it's oakland. there's always chaos, right? >> a daly city police suv with visible front end damage was towed away from the scene. it's not yet clear how the patrol car was damaged in the chase. daly city police were not available for comment. in oakland, joey hornick ktvu, fox two news.

>> and another car crash across the bay area in san francisco. sfpd says four people are now in the hospital after officers on patrol saw a car crash into two vehicles near venice and mcallister, near city hall. it happened around 7:30 p.m. last night. citizen app footage shows officers treating one of the two men who had been driving the car. sfpd says both men are now in custody. you can see the video there. how damaging that crash was. car doors are mangled and debris littered the street. the three victims and one of the suspects are currently hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries. >> more than 9000 illegal pills were recovered in marin county after an international package was intercepted. marin county officials say the drug, suspected to be fake fentanyl pills, all found at a home in the north bay and nevada. this was after homeland security busted a package from the uk with fentanyl inside that was headed to the very same home, officials say the street value of the pills is around $50,000.

detectives also seized suspected cocaine, ketamine, amphetamines, psilocybin mushrooms and heroin. two people living at the residence were arrested on a number of drug charges. >> a homeless encampment on an oakland beach is getting cleared this week. the city of oakland is planning on executing a homeless sweep at toll plaza beach on tuesday. it's the first homeless sweep in the bay area since the u.s. supreme court's ruling that allowed officials to clear out encampments without offering shelter. we spoke to an unhoused resident who lives there. >> it comes down to affordable housing. most of these people are living in their rvs or motorhomes or everything, because they just can't afford the rent of apartments anymore. >> over in san francisco, mayor london breed said aggressive sweeps will start next month. >> well, beware of scam texts claiming to be from usps. your post office details on how to spot and avoid the fraudulent

coastline, san francisco, our bayside communities not included in this advisory, but still the warm up will return for the entire bay area. so that is what we have coming our way. those advisories are just a reminder to make sure you are very careful when you are outdoors during the afternoon hours, and try to avoid strenuous activities. we'll have more on the heat and how it impacts your body. coming up in a moment. this high pressure is going to strengthen back our direction, and that is going to lock in that heat for at least a few days. the good news is, by thursday, we begin to see temperatures trend downward. and then into the weekend. that cooling trend right now looks to continue. here's a look at the futurecast model. so the system up in here the element that is providing us with the cool down this weekend is going to pass. and we have that high pressure coming back our direction. notice the clockwise movement. there is an indication of the upper level flow around that high pressure that will be coming our way. meanwhile, alexander doors at this time

>> thanks so much. rosemary. well, california's dry summer heat comes with that. the ever present threat of wildfires. and every year we deal with more extreme conditions that could pose serious threats to our health if we're not prepared. joining us now to share some crucial tips on staying safe and prepared is pulmonologist and researcher kaiser permanente doctor laura myers. thanks so much for being here with us this morning. it's a pleasure. we were just looking at some of those temperatures on the board there, 100 degree heat. we live in an area with extremes. right now. there's several wildfires burning. talk about the threat in the air right now for folks. >> absolutely. so when there's smoke in the air from wildfires, there's more particles in the air. and the particles are very tiny. they can travel very long distances. so you can be affected even if you're located far from the actual wildfire. and when people breathe in these particles, there's inflammation.

there's inflammation not just in the lungs, but actually the whole body. certain people can be more susceptible to these particles, that is, young children, pregnant women, and then older adults who have underlying heart and lung conditions. so that's asthma, copd or chronic obstructive lung disease. and we talk about the particles in terms of concentration. so when the particle concentration is higher the patients are more susceptible to some of the negative health effects. >> what is the best way to protect yourself. >> so there's something called the air quality index. that's a number that's put out by the environmental protection agency. if you're into numbers, that's a good index to look at. but thankfully here in the bay area, we do have the bay area air quality management district. and they put out advisories. they actually have a text alert that you can sign up for and i sign up for them. i tell my patients to sign up for them and they

will tell you exactly when the air quality index might be high enough that you should change your behavior, such as staying inside or using, you know, air cleaners if you're at high enough risk. >> and certainly we'll put out those alerts when we receive them from the district. now, we know in the summertime, people spend a lot of time in the pool, at the beach with their families. what are some of the threats that exist there? we know there's rip currents and so forth. >> absolutely. so, you know, going to the beach, playing in the ocean and the sand, it's really fun, especially for the kiddos. but it can be extremely dangerous. and so, as we all know, accidents happen quite quickly in a common scenario actually, is that there are multiple adults in the vicinity, but not a single adult is primarily responsible. and so it's highly recommended to have children swimming in areas where there are lifeguards, have them with life vests or life preservers. and you adults can use the tag in tag out method.

so making very clear to a partner or a family member that you're going to step away, and that they are primarily responsible for the kiddos while they're swimming at the beach. also it's important to think of the mantra never turn your back to the ocean because waves can really come up and drift you off to sea. and of course, the traditional teaching, if you're in a rip current, is to follow the flow and then swim parallel to the shore, and then finally, i implore everyone to really take note of some of the posted warnings when you're going up to a new beach, especially because they will warn you about the water quality. the water depth, and not diving into shallow waters. and that sort of thing. >> and especially on a nice day, the water may not look so threatening, but it can actually be very dangerous. >> yes, and conditions can change quickly. >> and we talk about the heat. we've dealt with a number of hot

temperatures, heat waves already this summer. i think we're in for some more before summer wraps up. so what are some of the best tips for folks to stay safe? >> i agree that, you know, in the coming weeks and months, we will probably have, you know, more long stretches of high heat, high heat affects the whole body. and some of the same folks who are susceptible to poor air quality are also susceptible to high heat. so, again, babies, children, pregnant women and older adults with underlying conditions. and so if you don't have air conditioning, there are towns and counties who, put forth cooling centers. and so you can look for nixle warnings. you can sign up through the county and try to find a cooling center. another option is to find a park. so in green spaces, temperatures, actually are 1 to 7 degrees lower. >> thank you so much for joining

and that lasted over three weeks. if you get a text from a number claiming to be the u.s. postal service, it's more than likely a scam. a report by software company guardio says the usps was one of the most copied brands when it came to phishing scams in the second quarter of the year. scam texts are being sent with strange link formats, claiming the usps needs your attention and a parcel cannot be delivered because of issues like incomplete addresse. the fake links try to get your information in order to commit fraud. the u.s. postal service says it uses text only if customers are requesting a tracking number on an item, and they only use five digit short codes. >> embarcadero plaza in san francisco could soon undergo a massive overhaul. private developer hok unveiled renderings of a park this week that would replace the current embarcadero plaza. right now, the plaza is lined with brick

>> time now. 833 police are searching for two suspects involved in a car chase that led officers from daly city across the bay into oakland. all this taking place saturday afternoon, ending with a crash at fruitvale avenue and foothill boulevard. witnesses say two of the suspects ditched the car. they escaped while another was arrested right before the crash. a person working nearby says the gray lexus hit an innocent woman woman while she was shopping. >> they hit her and she she went up in the air and she she fell on the floor. >> that woman taken away by ambulance. no word on her condition this morning. police are still investigating that accident in oakland. >> and another car crash across the bay in san francisco. sfpd says four people are now in the hospital after officers on patrol saw a car crash into two vehicles near venice and mcallister, near city hall. it happened around 730 last night, citizen app footage shows

officers treating one of the two men who had been driving the car. sfpd says both men are now in custody. you can see in the video how damaging the crash was. car doors are mangled, debris litter the street there. the three victims and one of the suspects are currently hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries. neighbors in redwood city woke up to find their front yard covered in water after a car crashed into a fire hydrant. this video posted on citizen app, shows the messy scene from last night. this took place on roosevelt and junipero avenue. redwood city police say a driver hit a parked car and sent it into the hydrant. no one was injured in the incident. the water main break is now under control. officers say they're still investigating this crash. >> chp up in napa county says a drug sniffing member of its canine patrol played a key role in a recent bust. highway patrol has released the photo of the dog named champ, alongside the

drugs that were seized ten days ago. investigators say champ and his handler were in a patrol car. they were traveling down highway 29 when the officer pulled over. drivers suspected of tailgating, while the chp says champ then quickly sniffed out more than 70 pounds of methamphetamine that were inside that car. they pulled over. well, the ripple effects of a deadly explosion in the east bay are still being felt. some 80 years later. >> more than 300 men lost their lives in the port chicago disaster near concord, when two munitions ships blew up during world war two. ktvu is joey horta shows us what's being done to prevent the historic tragedy from being forgotten. >> a solemn commemoration 80 years in the making, with a helicopter flyover honoring hundreds of lives lost, killed 320 military, merchant, marine and civilian personnel july 17th, 1944. two ships at the

port chicago naval magazine at suisun bay, loaded with munitions, exploded. 320 men died instantly, including more than 200 black men. >> they had been white. they would never have been put in the situations they were put in. >> it would become the largest homeland disaster of world war two. the port chicago disaster. the nonprofit friends of port chicago national memorial fought to make the site a national memorial. >> we're small, but we are mighty. our mission is to honor those who died here, those who served here, those who were injured here, those who protested here. >> the port chicago 50, a group of black sailors refusing to return to duty at the disaster site without proper training, fearing another explosion. >> you cannot take the racism out of this history. >> the men would be convicted of

mutiny and sent to prison. after the war they would be released and segregation of the military would soon come to an end. >> today we have corrected a historic wrong. >> just this week, the secretary of the navy announcing the exoneration of those 50 men, a vindication that none of them would live to see, sends a very powerful message to those who served today that we will not tolerate the injustices that perhaps occurred in the past. >> and also serves, i think, as an example for the many young men and women around our country who perhaps are thinking about joining the military. it is a different military today. >> attendees, including families of those brave men who gave their lives while serving the country, placing flowers on the water to honor this tragedy of the past while ensuring the next generation will never forget. joey hornick ktvu fox two news san francisco's annual aids walk is back, with thousands expected

to take part in today's fundraising event. >> and that includes amanda quintana. she's out there to give us a look at how participants are raising awareness for hiv aids research and it's all kicking off this morning. amanda, good morning. >> good morning. yes, it's very friendly out here. people are excited for this walk. they're getting a little bit of pancakes. some potatoes, lots of little breakfast items that they can get before they go out and do this. five k walk. and this is also a time for people to come together. a lot of these people, they do this walk every single year. so they know a lot of the other people, they see a lot of them. and they're all happy to be fundraising together for this one cause. and coming together to honor people who have passed. also celebrate what people have accomplished. they're also fighting for the future, trying to create a future free of aids. so they have the pancake breakfast, and then the actual walk starts at 1030. this is a big event for

the city. there's really so much history here with this walk. it started in 1987. they raised more than $96 million for organizations across seven bay area counties. just this year, they've almost hit $1 million. there are $960,000, although there is no cure for aids, there are medications that can control hiv and prevent it from progressing. so most people in the u.s. with hiv do not develop aids. i spoke to the organizer about why it's still so important to have events like this and raise money. >> it's so important because even though there's a lot of, gains that we made in the fight against hiv and aids, as people get older and have been taking the meds for a long time, there's other things that happen. you know, if there's a golden compass program at ucsf and they're showing, hiv and aging in people like most people with hiv are 50 years or older. and so we have to take care of

those people, you know, the long term. long term effects of all the medications be on. so it could be affecting their kidney. it could be affecting their liver, it could be diabetes, you know, just all kinds of things that are happening now. >> we've been talking to some of the participants, and a lot of them are walking with a specific person in mind. one woman we spoke to said that her father passed away from aids 37 years ago. actually, the year that this race started. so she's doing this walk in honor of him thinking of him. she had special shirts made. one man is walking for himself. he says he's had hiv for 25 years, comes to this walk every single year. so people really have someone on their minds. they have a reason to walk and someone that they're thinking about as they walk. this five-k today live in san francisco. amanda quintana ktvu, fox two news really impactful personal stories. >> thank you so much. amanda quintana, live in san francisco.

and help save us from outages. a wildfire east of clear lake, near the border of lake and colusa counties. the ridge fire broke out yesterday afternoon. the last update from cal fire had it at 2500 acres and containment at 15. 50 buildings

are currently being threatened. several road closures are in place, with no estimated time of reopening. in placer county. firefighters are stamping out a small fire near the community of newcastle. the lehi fire broke out friday evening, burning about nine acres. cal fire says it was sparked by someone who was lawn mowing in dry grass. evacuations were put in place but have since been lifted. the fire burned at least one building in that area, the liberty fire, burned multiple buildings in san joaquin county. cal fire says it started friday afternoon and spread to more than 100 acres. it destroyed at least three homes and left more than 600 customers without power. fire crews have completely contained the fire. investigators are still looking into how it started. >> all right, 845 your time. let's take a look outside. and that kind of gray july look, it's still kind of hovering over the bay. i know they got the

quickly what your company does. >> our company is in the contents restoration business. so we specialize in cleaning things like fine art, electronics and clothing and textiles after they've been damaged by smoke from fires. >> so you you clean them up? basically. >> yeah, we clean and restore them. and in the case of electronics, we test them and then we store them for clients until their home or business is ready to be moved back into. okay. well let's let's talk some tips. >> sure. your landscaping, your house, designing the outdoor. is there a right or wrong way to do that when it comes to fire safety? >> well, i do think so. i think as you are closer to rural areas, especially in the bay area, and we're rimmed by these hills that get dry in the summer. so hardscape is good to put in when and where you can. succulents are good plants, lavender. so there really are some beautiful things you can use in your yard, but keep things trimmed back. and when you cut back dry grass. just as this last story reported before

the weather here, don't cut it in the dry summer. cut that grass before things start getting brown. so to keep it low. >> so when it's green, when it's green, when it's green. yeah, we've got a graphic here talking about defensible space. maybe you could talk us through this a little bit. >> sure, the cal fire has come up with a recommendation that within 100ft of a of a home or a structure, you keep anything that's flammable away. so that means, again, a hardscape keeping, moist landscaping there. and the real key here is the first five feet, which they call zone zero and zone zero. they don't want anything flammable in there. and that should just be gravel, stones, hardscape stuff. >> hardscape. >> right? right. they also recommend 30ft of hose on each side of the house. good idea. faucet. so you can as if you hear the fires coming. you can do a quick spray. but i believe from my experience, i've been involved in a number of these fires starting in 2017 with the

santa rosa fire that the key here is keeping your roof clean, your gutters clean, especially the valleys of roofs. >> if you've got pine trees, those needles can collect not only put a leak in your roof, but they're highly flammable, right? >> that's absolutely true. so because there are two types of wildfires that can happen simultaneously. one is the surface fire, which burns grasses. but then there's what we call a crown fires. when sparks get up into the trees, this is very this is commonly how they spread the wildfire spread the furthest and the fastest. because sparks can travel miles once they get there, then they drop. they can hit your roof and your fire. your house can catch on fire. >> are there certain trees and plants you should stay away from? here in northern california. >> not necessarily. you just got to keep them trimmed back. yeah, i would say that there's not necessarily a plan in particular, but there's some you can you can choose. >> yeah. and if you're in an area where there's a lot of grass, you might want to get someone to come and cut that. so

you've got how many feet do you need 100ft. 100ft. >> really. absolutely. that's what the cal fire has. and there's also a now a state regulation that in sre areas which are state responsibility areas, they can determine specifically by law that you must have 100ft of defensible space. >> biggest mistake people make i'd say not keeping their roofs clean. >> yeah, yeah, >> there's my dad was a roofer. i've cleaned a few in my days, so. that's so important. >> yeah. and i've been through some of these neighborhoods that have been devastated by wildfires. i will tell you that the one type of house and type of roof that survives the best tile, tile. exactly. and stucco siding tile is forever. >> yeah. all right, well, we got to keep it there. andrew, thanks for the tips. really appreciate it. are you busy, by the way? >> yes, we are right now. >> i bet you are. all right andrew, thanks much. appreciate it. coming up next, several records set during last night's wnba all star game. the change

up. >> thanks, rosemary. pressure is mounting against president biden this morning. senator joe manchin became the latest lawmaker to call for president biden to pass the torch. it comes a day after dozens of demonstrators gathered outside the white house, encouraging biden to abandon his reelection campaign. the event was referred to as a pass the torch rally. the protesters say. now, more than ever, democrats need the strongest possible candidate to defeat former president trump in november. trump has been polling ahead of biden in crucial states. several democratic leaders, including some from the bay area, have asked the president to drop out of the race. >> meanwhile, former house speaker nancy pelosi, largely avoiding the hot topic of president biden's reelection bid during her appearance at a big democratic fundraiser back east, pelosi spoke to more than 900 people attending a democratic event billed as a unity dinner. this is in raleigh, north carolina. last night, the democrat out of the city barely

mentioned president biden's name during her speech and largely focused on the republican nominee, trump. pelosi said the last time donald trump was in the white house, the republicans provided huge tax breaks to the rich. >> all they did was pass a bill that gave 83% of the benefits to the top 1, the top 1% adding $2 trillion to not million, not $2 trillion to the national debt. >> pelosi is among a growing group of prominent democratic leaders who have reportedly expressed their concerns about president biden's ability to beat donald trump come november. >> former president trump appeared at his first campaign rally since his attempted assassination eight days ago. last night, trump spoke before a large crowd of enthusiastic

supporters in the crucial swing state of michigan. the now official 2024 republican presidential candidate mentioned the attempt on his life several times during his speech in grand rapids. >> the other side is going around trying to make me sound extreme. they keep saying he's a threat to democracy. i'm saying, what the #### did i do for democracy? last week, i took a bullet for democracy. >> this was trump's first speech since his formal nomination. at last week's republican national convention. he was joined by his newly announced running mate, republican senator jd vance of ohio, who could possibly reject the idea that four years of president trump has been a #### of a lot better than four years of joe biden, right? vance and trump will now make separate campaign appearances this week. vance has left michigan to appear at two events in ohio and virginia. virginia tomorrow, trump will go to north carolina for a campaign rally in raleigh on wednesday. >> time now. 905 police in

fremont are investigating a deadly shooting. the gunfire was first reported shortly before 130 yesterday afternoon near mission boulevard in the city's niles neighborhood. several people living in the area say they heard the sound of more than a dozen gunshots, then immediately called the police. >> i just heard a gang of gunshots. just just, you know, rounding off, you know, and then it kind of it was like a pause in the middle and then like, maybe 6 or 7 more, something with probably like 12, 15 shots, maybe. >> police say they found a man suffering from a number of gunshot wounds. he died at the scene. so far, there have been no arrests in that case. in fremont, investigators say it's still unclear what led up to that deadly shooting. >> a homeless encampment on an oakland beach is getting cleared this week. the city of oakland is planning on executing a homeless sweep at toll plaza beach on tuesday. it's the first homeless sweep in the bay area

since the u.s. supreme court's ruling that allowed officials to clear out encampments without offering shelter. we spoke to an unhoused resident who lives there, comes down to affordable housing. >> most of these people are living in their rvs or motorhomes or everything because they just can't afford the rent of apartments anymore. >> over in san francisco, mayor london breed said aggressive sweeps will start next month. >> global tech outage looks to still be disrupting some services at local bay area airports. sfo 60 flights have been canceled thus far. more than 70 have been delayed since friday. san jose has seen more than 20 delays and cancellation. travelers out of oakland are seeing more than 15. that outage took place friday after a security software update sparked a huge blackout for airlines, banks, health care facilities and several other industries. well, san francisco's annual aids walk is back with thousands expected to take part in today's big fundraising event.

>> ktvu is amanda quintana is out there to give us a look at how participants are raising awareness for hiv aids research. good morning amanda. >> good morning. so they are raising awareness and raising funds. but one of the other things that they're doing, which i think is really cool, is they're remembering people who have passed from aids and hiv. so one of the ways that they do that is this huge quilt, and they're just starting to get it set up. one of them, you can see that one on the right with the dark blue kind of half and the light blue kind of half. that whole thing is dedicated to the san francisco gay men's chorus. so on each kind of piece, there are eight names, about eight names, but that's just one piece of what is going to be this huge quilt on this hill. so i'm told there are 31 big pieces that are all going to connect here on the hill, each of those pieces has about eight names, and those are names of people who have passed from hiv and aids. so people get

to come here and kind of see those names. remember, it's a way to honor the people that have passed, as they're also here to kind of share in this mission of creating a future free of aids. so they get to see this quilt before they start the walk. and that walk starts at 1030. this is really a huge event for the city of san francisco, because there's just so much history here with this walk. it's raised $96 million for organizations across seven bay area counties. it's been going on since 1987. this year, just this year they've raised $960,000. so they're very close to $1 million this year. and although there is still no cure for aids, there are medications that can control hiv, prevent it from progressing. so most people in the u.s. with hiv do not develop aids. but it's still important to have events like this. the organizer talked to me about why they need to continue to raise money and come

together. >> young people need to know the history. they also need to understand that there's help out there. and we also need to let people know that if you become hiv positive, there's all of these different organizations that you can go to that will help you. >> and not only is there this quilt so you can remember people a lot of people are here with somebody in mind, somebody that they walk for. we've seen people that have big signs that they're going to be carrying with the name of somebody who has passed. people made shirts. so it really is as well as a fundraiser. it's kind of an emotional event to remember these people as well and come together to make sure that we can have a future free of aids. so it's a really special event here in san francisco, live in san francisco. amanda quintana, ktvu, fox two news i should say, okay, amanda, thank you for that. >> we're going to switch gears because today is national ice cream day. hooray. right. not

advisory that will go from monday morning until wednesday night. so we're talking about three full days of heat. the element that has provided us with the cool down this weekend will be lifting out high pressure. we'll be restrengthening our direction and bringing with it the heat outside our doors. at this hour we have a decent onshore breeze. the marine layer is deeper this morning as well, hayward reporting an onshore breeze at about ten miles per hour. livermore it's ten gusting to 21 at sfo. temperatures this morning in the low 50s over san francisco to low 60s in concord. brentwood, one of the warmer spots this morning 75. but most areas dropping off by several degrees during the overnight hours. hopefully you felt it into the afternoon. we go with the again a's taking on the angels. mostly sunny skies, 69 degrees at game time. low 70s in the forecast for oakland this afternoon on the peninsula. 78 in redwood city for the inner east bay, 88 in concord and the north bay 91 for santa rosa. the
